Walling Up On Defense
You've probably heard your coach or teammates at some point say "Wall-up!" when guarding the ball. What exactly does "wall-up" mean? It refers to the on-ball defender challenging the offensive player's shot by stretching out their arms vertically and meeting the offensive player with their chest. This enables the defense to contest the shot while limiting their chance to foul and making it more difficult to be scored on.
Film Study
Here are a few examples of collegiate players this past season doing a great job of walling up while also being physical defenders. To increase your chances of not receiving fouls, make sure your hips are low to stay quick on your feet and line your arms vertically with your ears. Remember, a great defensive possession isn't over until your team has secured the rebound!
